Here is some info about the Judaism in Romania from Pinhas Hikes MA in history.
The Jewish community in Romania started very early at the time of the Macbee, but grew larger only in the middle ages when Jewish traders came to Romania from Poland, the Balkans and Austria-Hungary and also from Spain after the Alhambra decree
In 1899 there were 266,719 Jews in Romania (4.9% from the population), Most of them did not have citizenship.
With the technology development Jews started to take large prat in Romania trade with other countries and settled in the big cities (as other minorities in Romania).
Because of economical crisis and policy that was against the Jews about 90% of the Jews were in poverty. Antisemitism in Romania existed under Ottoman Empire but became worst in Romania autonomy. Romania's Jews that did not have rights suffered from oppression, and even promises to representative from other liberal countries that came to stop it didn't changed the policy.
After exemption from Ottoman Empire, in Berlin Conference Romania was forced to give rights to the jews but evaded from doing it. Under pressure from outside and from Romania itself, the parliament decided to give citizenship in a long and complicated process, that included parliament discussion on each request. Only 87 Jews out of 250,000 got citizenship. The Jews were still discriminated and persecuted.
After 1881 Romania declared independence the Jews hopped for better days, but in 1881-1882 there were particularly hard decrees against the Jews.
n 1882 Carol I the King of Romania got 2 letters: One from the Jewish council asking from him to help them and the other asking not to give the Jews any rights and claiming they are trying to conquer Romania economically and politically. The parliament discussed the state of the Jews but the results were against decrees against the Jews.
in 1885 a correction in the law permitted to the government to expel anyone that is suspected in endangering the country. It was meant to be against refugees from Russia but was operated against Jews as well.
Till 1904 6529 were exiled, 1177 of them were Jews.
In 1886 an antisemitic congress took place, and in 1895 in a national congress the "Romanian antisemitic alliance" was founded, that was leaded by Romania minster of education. Its goal was to struggle against Romania Jews in order to
Dreyfus affair and war against the socialism increased the hostility to the Jews.
In 1898 a pogroms took place in "Iasi", a town that included 40,000, after the damage to people and property many Jews moved out of Romania.
